Symposium on Nature-Based and Biological Technologies for Environmental Remediation and Resource Recovery

Symposium Chairman

Symposium Description

The transition towards sustainable environmental management is driving renewed interest in biological and nature-based approaches for the remediation of contaminated land, water, and industrial waste streams. This symposium invites contributions exploring innovative applications of bioremediation, phytoremediation, agromining, biomining, passive treatment systems, constructed wetlands, microbial technologies, and other nature-driven solutions that harness biological processes to restore environmental quality while generating broader ecological and economic benefits.

The session will provide a platform for researchers, industry practitioners, policymakers, and technology developers to present advances in fundamental science, field-scale implementation, monitoring methodologies, and commercial deployment. Particular interest lies in approaches that contribute to resource recovery, critical raw material supply, circular economy objectives, carbon sequestration, ecosystem restoration, and climate resilience.

Topics may include, but are not limited to, metal recovery through agromining and phytomining, microbial-assisted mineral extraction, passive remediation of mine waters, contaminated land rehabilitation, bio-based treatment of industrial effluents, ecological engineering, and integrated systems combining remediation with biomass production and valorisation.

By bringing together diverse perspectives from environmental engineering, ecology, biotechnology, mining, and agriculture, this symposium aims to showcase emerging opportunities and identify pathways for scaling biological remediation technologies to address global environmental and resource challenges.
