Prof. Giovanni (Gio) Cristofoli is Regional President for Azerbaijan, Georgia and Türkiye (AGT) at bp, based in Baku, a position he assumed on 1 October 2025.
Gio has been with bp for 23 years and has held multiple leadership roles around the world. Most recently he was Senior Vice President of bp Solutions in bp’s Production and Operations business. There he led a team that partnered with bp’s Production and Refining businesses to achieve differential performance. bp Solutions delivers through effective execution, best practices, technical expertise and business improvement, bridging competitive gaps. Its global scope covers turnarounds, logistics, major projects operations, engineering, subsea operations, site projects, operations excellence, and maintenance and reliability.
His earlier roles in bp’s upstream operations include Vice President of Production Integration and Transformation, Vice President of Operations and Major Project Operations, Area Operations Manager at Tangguh in Indonesia, and Engineering and Offshore Installation Manager on several North Sea platforms. He has also led major transformation programmes. These include moving the Upstream business from an asset-based to a functional operating model, and redesigning the Production organisation during bp’s 2021 reorganisation.
Gio sees bp’s future in operational excellence and competitiveness. He wants to unleash people’s potential by bringing them together to solve problems and connect ideas to grow value.
He is Chairman of the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP). In that role he fosters collaboration and helps steer the industry toward safer, more efficient and more sustainable practices. He is also a Visiting Professor at Brunel University of London and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2026.
Gio holds a PhD in Thermodynamics from the University of Padua, Italy. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and a Chartered Scientist.
Away from work, he enjoys time with his family, hiking, riding his motorbike, reading historical novels and tending his land in the Italian countryside.
